Deep-rooted friendship between China & Pakistan can only get stronger.  China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is an ongoing development project which aims to connect Gwadar Port of Pakistan to northwestern region of Xinjiang, China through a network of highways, railways and pipelines. The economic corridor will run about 2,700 kilometers from Gwadar, Pakistan to Kashghar (Kashi), China.  This is probably the biggest overseas investment by China till date and is expected to be fully operational in coming years.  Infrastructure development in the process will eventually be beneficial to the whole region neighboring both countries and beyond.

Gwadar is a deep sea port which will drastically reduce the transit time of exported & imported goods shipped from & to China's landlocked Xinjiang province, through Pakistan, from the Arabian Sea with a reach to Middle East and Europe.

Cotton production maybe reduced in coming years till buffer stocks come to a more competitive level or one bad crop year may turn things around sooner than expected but this commodity will keep growing in most suitable environments and changing hands in areas most competitive in cost and human resources.

Xinjiang is heartland of Chinese cotton; development of textile industry in this region with incentives for exports will reduce raw material transport cost to other provinces, better utilization of domestic cotton resources and will create job opportunities for the local residents. Export processing zones at different points in and around this route to develop textile industry will attract companies to setup, expand or shift their manufacturing facilities here to be more cost effective and competitive for the future.

Chinese textile expertise, dominance & utilization of resources build over the years and spread around the country should be used in regions where they can be more beneficial in coming years and Xinjiang should be on top of the list.

CPEC will be a game changer for the region and Xinjiang can be a major beneficiary if parallel planning and implementation to use regional cotton & manpower resources of this province are wisely taken into consideration.
