Viscose staple and filament prices rose further
2016-03-25

Viscose fiber prices have continued rising in the past days in China, although at a lower pace. Production capacities could actually decline this year, which is very unusual on China's fiber market.

Benchmark 1.5D*38mm has only gained 80 yuan per metric ton or 0.6%.

In US$ terms, prices have risen 2 cents per kilo or 0.75 cent per lb (+0.8%).

The VSF prices have surged about 14% since the start of the year in US$ terms.

The suppliers have benefited from a relatively tight supply with inventories having fallen to a low level before Chinese holidays.

More importantly, a need to comply with environmental rules has forced a major producer to exit the market.

Whatever the slight rise in facilities this year, production capacities could actually fall about 5% in 2016 in China after having only gained 6% in the past year.

Demand is now recovering from spun yarn producers in addition, in line with a seasonal rebound in textile production in China.

Spun viscose prices have also risen in the last weeks, thanks to stronger sales to yarn processors.

The viscose chain may therefore continue ignoring the fall of the cotton prices ahead of official sales from state reserves, expected to start by mid-April.
